London Style: Study Abroad Edition

Studying abroad in London for the semester had definitely given me the chance to gain exposure to
different fashion trends. European fashion is different- it’s trendy and hip and everyone seems like
they’re always ready for an important meeting. I definitely have gone on a couple shopping sprees
even with the limited space I have in my suitcase that needs to fit my entire life in London.

Going to class, I no longer pull out any sweatshirt and a pair of leggings. In fact, I don’t even wear
leggings to go to the grocery store that’s across the street from where I live. Here, leaving my dorm
means putting on jeans with pointed boots and a long peacoat. I’ve also noticed that Londoners love
skirts, and wearing a skirt with tights to go to school is not considered fancy. I have also been noticing
and loving fun pants lately. Throwing on a solid shirt with loose, bright pants and a jean jacket is such
a simple and easy look.

Since I’ve been here through the winter, I’ve had to learn how to dress smart. So far, I’ve been on
four trips to different countries around Europe and will be visiting four more before I return home.
Packing in a backpack for entire trips has shown me how to pack efficiently. I have not noticed many
people here wearing sneakers, but I often carry my favorite pair of black Vans anyway when leaving
for a trip- they’re light and match with many outfits. I also like taking my heeled, suede black booties
to dress up outfits as well. You never know when there might be a rain shower here, so carrying an
umbrella and investing in shoes that can endure water is important too. Going out, I opt to wear jeans
and crop top with some sneakers. People here do wear skirts and shimmery tops but not being able to
bring most of my closet with me to London has limited my options. This outfit serves me well,
however- I can get away with it in a more casual or a slightly fancier setting.

Accessories have been something that I have really enjoyed experimenting with while I’ve been here.
I have made countless trips to Primark to buy cheap statement earrings. I love using them to dress up a
casual sweater and jeans look or throwing them when I go out. Throwing big scarfs on over plain outfits
in peak winter also helped to stay warm and spice up whatever I was wearing. I bought a cabbie hat at
a local market and have had tons of fun experimenting with it while in Paris- I can’t wait to try to
incorporate it into outfits back at home. I also recently invested in a hair scarf- something I never would
have thought I could rock.
