This past weekend a few of the members of our organization took a trip to New York City to visit the Tiffany & Co. headquarters! Filled with Rutgers University Alumni, they gladly welcomed us and gave us a deeper perspective of the company itself. FORM also had the chance to visit The Museum at F.I.T. and its two recent exhibitions: Fairy Tale Fashion and Denim: Fashion's Frontier, keep reading to learn more!
At Tiffany's we were able to learn more about the world of Tiffany and their values, their latest marketing and advertisement campaigns, as well as the company culture and what it is like to work there. From the perspective of several different positions, we were able to interact with the employees and see how their time at Rutgers had an impact on their future at Tiffany & Co.!
Tiffany & Co. has such amazing goals for the future, including their commitment to maintaining the environment - staying conscious of greenhouse gas emissions, while keeping the quality of their diamonds. Tiffany & Co. exudes a simply beautiful and elegant atmosphere and we are so glad to have had the chance to speak with so many of their successful employees!
The trip doesn't stop there...
While in the area, FORM also made time to stop by the infamous Fashion Institute of Technology Museum and its two current exhibits. . .
1. Fairy Tale Fashion
Although Cinderella may be the first thing to come to mind when "fairy tale" is mentioned, The Museum at F.I.T. associated clothing with several other tales including Beauty and the Beast, Furrypelts, The Little Mermaid, and The Wizard of Oz. Using these as inspiration, each item on display is meant to portray either a "character's transformation, vanity, power, or privilege." This exhibit and the clothing within it evoke a sense of wonder and fantasy - intrinsic to the fairy tale genre.
Fairy Tale Fashion uses some of the most beautiful and distinctive examples of fashion to illustrate fifteen fairy tales, including Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Little Red Riding Hood. These pieces were made by luxurious labels such as Comme des Garçons, Dolce and Gabbana, Alexander McQueen, Prada, Rodarte, and Undercover.
2. Denim: Fashion's Frontier
"On any given day, nearly half the worlds population is in jeans." - Daniel Miller
This exhibit, Denim: Fashion's Frontier, tours through the history of denim fashion from the 19th century to the present. The exhibit follow's denim's origins from 19th century work wear all the way to its adoption into mainstream culture. Finishing off with the arrival of blue jeans as luxury items during the more recent centuries, denim shows off its capabilities through modern experimentation with techniques such as deconstruction.
Denim: Fashion's Frontier exhibits important points in history, highlighting denim's main role and engagement in history at the workplace and even now in high fashion and everyday wear. Some themes of the above piece include distressing, deconstructing, and repurposing by designers Levi Strauss & Co., Roberto Cavalli, Claire McCardell, Junya Watanabe, Rag & Bone, and many more.
THAT'S ALL FOR NOW, UNTIL NEXT TIME. . .
